My Sassy Girl

The movie is much better than the name implies
I kept NOT watching this movie because of the name... but I kept reading great reviews about it online. So I finally did watch it. Classic of the genre, the intricate story line is everything! A fun, quirky, embarrassing, painful, humorous, raw, and poignant reflection of two people who happened to meet. Fantastic ending! A very enjoyable way to spend two hours, in fact: This is a story that stays with you. NO spoilers here, the great reviews are well deserved. Sometimes the subtitles fall short, but it doesn't ruin the movie.

Wonderfully funny, thoroughly Korean melodramatic rom-com
This is a modern classic, and its themes have been copied in myriad other Korean films since its release (even copied into a Hollywood version of this film starring Elisha Cuthbert), but the themes are thoroughly Korean, derived from age-old Korean folk tales and stories (see the story of Gyeon Woo and Jik Nyeo - 견우와 직녀 - for one example). The split nature of the story and the pacing might seem odd to those more familiar with Hollywood-style movies, but the story is engaging, humorous, and sweet, and entertains from beginning to end.

Step Outside the Box
This film has a bit of all things. At times it works well and at other times it doesn't work so well. For being one of the first Korean Language films I have ever watched it was an excellent toe dip into the culture of Korean Cinema. After viewing I understand why it was such a big hit in South Korea.

The Tuche Family (Les Tuche)

A reminder that French films can be silly comedies
A silly story about a "hick" family who wins the lottery and moves to Monaco. A bit like "Beverly Hillbillies," but as a Francophone, it was interesting to see a French film follow an American setup. It's tongue-in-cheek and shouldn't be taken seriously. There is a sweet message to be learned.

Heartbreaker [HD]

Fine French Fluff
HEARTBREAKER ('L'ARNACOEUR') is a delightful bit of French fluff, created as only the French know how. There are 'quotes' from certain films and songs that mix the two main characters together and add to the meringue of the farce. Based on a light story by Laurent Zeitoun, Jeremy Doner, and Yhan Gromb and directed with a fine sense of comic timing by Pascal Chaumeil, this is one of those examples of the farces the French do so well.

Alex Lipp (Romain Duris), his sister Mélanie (Julie Ferrier) and her husband Marc (Fran

Solo Con Tu Pareja [HD]

A Mexican Sex Farce That Plays By All The Expected Rules: We Have Alfonso Cuarón To Thank Or Blame!
Being a huge fan of Alfonso Cuarón's "Y tu mamá también" and having watched his evolution in American cinema (capped off with the great "Children of Men"), I was excited to check out this presentation of an early Cuarón film: "Sólo con tu pareja." Described here (and in many places) as a romantic comedy, I'm going to call it what it is. It is a pretty traditional sex farce. Anyone familiar with the sex farce genre (particularly international efforts from France and Spain) will instantly recognize many of the elements (both good and bad) which seem to follow this type of film. It may have been a groundbreaker in Mexican cinema, but it plays by all the expected conventions.

Any good sex farce teaches two major lessons: (1) promiscuity or irresponsible sex can be funny and (2) true love and redemption can be found in the arms of a character you either know nothing about or have nothing in common with. "Sólo con tu pareja" adheres to...

I love this show
There's something about this show that I love. Maybe it's their simple way of life, or their ingenuity, who knows

Awesome
Spencer and Eugene constantly find themselves in extreme situations but always use their redneck ingenuity and mountain know-how to get the job done. It's all part of life up there on Cold Mountain.

Could be better
Not bad content, but too much drama. Sad that every little task they wanted to accomplish was wrought with "so much danger", and "could be killed at any moment"..give me a break.

Showdown at Boot Hill [Blu-ray]

When will there be a DVD???
I'm a huge Charles Bronson fan and I'd love to see this movie but I don't feel right spending that amount on an old VHS. Anyone who reads this I'd like to see it on DVD, just send an email to Amazon and if enough people request it. With a little luck, they might do a burn on demand release. (Hopefully a decent qualify transfer)

Very Young Bronson
I have said this about other actors & their movies, If you are a Charles Bronson fan you will enjoy this film. If not I believe the odds of liking this film are less. If you are a western fan odds may go back up. It is Bl & Wh and kind of slow paced but the acting is fine.

Showdown
Not all that great; the only thing that saved it was Charles Bronson, who is always good. Worth a watch.

Moonshiners: Season 1

Entertaining but less realistic than season 2
I admit I love this show even though it isn't real. I watched season 2 live on TDC then bought season 1 here, and they clearly thought out how to make season 2 seem more real. In season 1 they make a huge deal how bootleggers aren't allowed out of the car etc ... But they pull right up even though there's a camera crew filming them at 4:00am? With no previous communication with the moonshiners? And some of the dialogue in season 1 just seems more rehearsed and amateurish. Still happy I bought it though, it's a great balance of live action, history, and how-to technical details.

Best Show Ever!!!
This show is amazing. Tim and Tickle are the best they work together to make moonshine to save up money to go legal. Tim is the serious one and Tickle is so funny and just a pure redneck genius, and he can do everything with out putting down his beer.

Fun AND Educational.
I like watching this one, because A) I have never experienced moonshine, though I suspect my great-grandpa ran some.
B) watching people talk about a subject they are so expect on, that is super illegal, is fascinating to me.

The history of it is so cool.

The Ghastly Love of Johnny X

Juvenile Delinquents From Space!: This Offbeat Parody Combines Music With Sci-Fi
The cult oddity "The Ghastly Love of Johnny X" is one of those rare movies that I suspect will be a complete love-it or hate-it phenomenon. Some will say the movie is a masterpiece of originality while others will decry it one of the worst movies ever made. Just watch, I fully stand by this prediction! For my taste, the movie is neither extreme. This low budget endeavor is an obvious labor of love to its makers and cast, it has some genuinely memorable moments, but it never really comes together as strongly as you might hope. I was really looking forward to "The Ghastly Love of Johnny X" because the idea really appealed to my oddball sensibilities. I have been known to champion cult films of this type (Larry Blamire films, for example, come to mind, especially the sublimely silly The Trail of the Screaming Forehead). Mixing science fiction with musicals with sixties era juvenile delinquents, there is certainly no lack of imagination in director Paul Bunnell's vision. But the...

Ghastly, yes, and a lot of fun, too!
THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X is an extremely entertaining movie, hard to categorize, yet always engaging. Right away we see the main characters are from some distant planet, setting the mood for what is to come. The fun really begins when we discover inner turmoil within Johnny's band of delinquent pals, banished to Earth because they won't play by the rules at home. One of them, the gorgeous and headstrong Bliss, has abandoned the gang and stolen Johnny's Resurrection Suit, and he wants it back. Some cult favorite actors add weight to the proceedings, including Reggie Bannister, Paul Williams and Kevin McCarthy, in his final role. Creed Bratton of THE OFFICE is unrecognizable in his bizarre and very funny turn, and even sweet Kate Maberly gets into the action before things are over.

If you've caught this wacky gem at one of its film festival screenings, then this is the dvd you've been waiting for. If you haven't, do yourself a favor and check it out! I myself was -...

Entertaining sci-fi musical - highly original
It has a similar zest and campiness as the musical "Little Shop of Horrors.". Lots of humor. Excellent music and dance numbers in this strange sci-fi story that also echoes the flavor of a Twilight Zone And a touch of "Rocky Horror Picture Show".
Surprisingly entertaining - a low budget labor of love by a talented director.

Room 514

An Enigmatic Israeli Drama That Turns Into An Effective Morality Play
The Israeli drama "Room 514" can be described as a claustrophobic chamber piece that examines some fairly universal topics despite its relatively confined settings. It's a small picture that packs a big punch. Almost all of the film's action is confined to a spare room, there are rarely more than two characters on screen at the same time, and the movie relies on an intimacy in its interactions that make the viewer feel almost like a voyeur (a fly on the wall, if you will). While many of these choices may have been dictated by the movie's budget, they are elements that help to make "Room 514" feel decidedly different. There is nothing particularly new about he topics that the screenplay raises, but the story is allowed to unfold organically without hitting you with overt politics or moral pronouncements. In the end, though, filmmaker Sharon Bar-Ziv wrestles with the weighty issues inherent in any territory divided by strife. When is force justifiable? When is it considered...

The permutations of Interrogation
It is rare to encounter a film confined (for the most part) to a single room that packs the wallop that this film form Israel delivers. Written and directed with great sophistication by Sharon Bar-Ziv and acted by a very small cast of splendid actors, this is a cinematic experience that shake's the viewer and makes an indelible impression of the many conflicts facing not only the Israelis of the story but of all peoples of global significance.

Anna (Asia Naifeld), whose origins are Russian, is in the Israeli army and is assigned the duty of investigating military/civilian incidents. Her current investigation involves interrogating Nimrod (Guy Kapulnik), an officer who is suspected of having information about a group of Israeli soldiers who brutally beat and unarmed Arab family. Nimrod is sarcastic about Anna's abilities, saying she doesn't understand warfare: his accusations are punctuated with frequent cellphone calls Anna accepts from her mother about household matters...

Gripping film with clear biased undercurrent by by Director
Political agenda of Film Director shows refusal to understand reality on the ground. Easy to raise questions about the military's behavior and conveniently ignore facts. Liberal point of view masks real facts.
Good acting by all actors, primarily the female interrogator and accused officer.

Che 2

A Bold Experiment, A Fascinating Film.
Steven Soderbergh's "Che" is one of those rare films where you'll either like it or hate it. It is not a conventional biography, it isn't even a conventional movie. Soderbergh is not interested in presenting a loud, thundering film about the icon Che Guevara, but instead he wants to provide an almost scientific analysis of a man driven by an idea and the campaigns he engaged in. Like Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette," this isn't a movie interested in bold political statements, it is simply trying to present events as they are known to have happened. It doesn't matter much whether you're a right-winger or a leftist, Soderbergh doesn't champion or attack Che's political views or goals, he simply presents a man's actions.

Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, 21 Grams) plays Guevara with an uncanny resemblance and a powerful presence. We meet him in Mexico City in the 1950s where he meets a group of Cuban exiles plotting the overthrow of the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista...

Man of the revolution
Steven Soderbergh created one of those movies that is lucky to have been made at all -- a four-hour-plus biopic of Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara.

But like most biographical movies, it's something of a mixed bag. Visually atmosphere and low-key in style, the two halves of "Che" focus on pivotal slices of Guevara's life, with an amazing lead performance by Benicio Del Toro as the titular revolutionary. Unfortunately, it's also a very slow-moving affair that brushes past some of the more unsavory facets of Che Guevara's life and personality... and ironically many of the positive ones.

Part 1: In the 1960s, Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) is in New York City for a UN conference, being interviewed by a US reporter about his viewpoints as a guerilla leader and revolutionary. Then the narrative jumps back a decade to when he and others (including Fidel Castro) consider the many injustices over in Cuba and start planning for a revolution. Despite being Argentinian by...

A++
I thought this movie was fantastic. I'm not really into politics and don't really have an opinion if Che was a good or bad person. As far as it being a movie- the story, directing, scenery, acting- this was done with the highest of quality. Non Hollywood-like which what matters to me.

Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan

I'M A LUMBERJACK, AND I'M NOT OKAY
Sgt. Hoke(Thomas Downey) is in charge a group of first time teen offenders at a camp in the woods of Minnesota. The hormonal teens camp outside. One of them in the group earns the wrath of a giant (about 15 to 40 feet depending on need) who attacks them. This is a fairly straight forward teen slasher film with the slasher being slightly different.

The special effects were bad. The CG Babe the Blue Ox was comical. The 1890's clothes looked modern. People chopped in half, blood spray. They attempted to create diverse personalities, but it fell flat as the acting fell short.

Parental Guide: F-bombs, near sex, nudity (Jill Evyn) There are worse Red Box rentals.

One Brilliant Scene Of Bad Movie Magic Can't Save The Rest Of This Low Budget Lunacy
Anyone that watches a SyFy Channel original movie on occasion knows that they rarely offer real chills. That doesn't mean that some of the films don't have a demented sort of charm. Grade A cheese, the best of the bunch tend to be hysterically unapologetic creature feature schlock. And who doesn't love bad B-movie mayhem? I certainly do and there aren't enough genetically mutated monsters to satisfy my cravings. However, sometimes there are movies that fail to accomplish even "dumb fun" and these can be painfully uninteresting. Unfortunately "Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyon" falls into this category. Late in the movie, a story is recounted that shows why Bunyon turned into a crazed axe wielding maniac. That scene is so supremely silly and terrific, it just demonstrated how mundane the rest of the movie was. Let's just say that I'll never think of Babe the Blue Ox in quite the same way. But this demented 5 star scene can't save the lack of creativity in the rest of the film...

no thief like a bad movie
I will sometimes purposefully watch a B movie. So I can be good with low budget, bad acting and a weak plot at times. This was way beyond terrible. I just recently watched Dark Waters which was a really bad flick. But in comparison was a blockbuster. Don't go anywhere near this little number. You could shoot a better video drunk in the dark with an old VHS recorder. And that's probably how they did it.

Heartland - The Complete First Season [DVD]

Fantastic family friendly series
This is a Canadian show filmed in the beautiful mountains of Alberta. It's about a teenage girl who is a talented horse whisperer. Lots of family drama and growing pains. Well worth it if you've never seen or heard of it. It's definitely something you could watch with your parents or your kids.

Heartland is the best!
Heartland is an awesome, clean cut, horse lovers dream show. Season 1 was relatively easy to see via Netflix, but Season 2 is where the issues begin. Midway through Season 2, Netflix came to a complete stop. Thanks to Amazon, I purchased Season 2 and was able to finish that. Since, I've also purchased Season 3 and 4 through Amazon. The problem is that Heartland is produced by Canadian Broadcasting, and us folks from the US are excluded from seeing what is going on in Season 5, which is being aired in Canada right now. I have emailed CBC, but so far with no response as to why us folks south of the border are excluded or why it's not available to us. Once I started watching it, I was totally hooked on it. You really need to watch the episodes in chronilogical order so as not to miss anything.

Completely satisfied
My daughter is completely in love with anything that has to do with horses, so I purchased this series for her. It has turned out to be a family favorite and are getting ready to purchase season 2.

Asheton, Ron - Tribute Concert With Iggy & The Stooges And Friends

Great Show
Stooges rock the sold-out Michigan Theater in their home town Ann Arbor in a killer tribute to the late Ron Asheton. There are moving testimonials by Rons brother Scott and Henry Rollins. Iggy and the band rip through their Raw Power based set, with some surprises from Kill City and others. Deniz Tek from Radio Birdman takes over on guitar for a short set from the first two albums. There is backing and interludes by a small orchestra. For Stooge fans everywhere, this is an unusual and unique one-off event, not to be missed. James Williamson returns and Steve Mackay joins in a rave-up for the last tune, No Fun.

Sound quality and visuals are excellent, and the performances are great.

The perfect gift since Netflix does not carry this...
This is special and the perfect gift for the Iggy Pop, Mike Watt, Ron Asheton fan. Apparently Netflix does not carry this and it was on my boyfriend's Amazon wish list.

Good by Ron
This was a great show. It started off a little slow but picked up quickly. I was glad to see how well orchestra music and the stooges music worked together it just shows theirs still room to grow in music.

For once the suspense is real
Just saw this on Pay Per View. Tremendously exciting, very realistic about a prostitute's life, and -- best of all -- there's real suspense. The audience is never certain who, if anyone, will survive. Some people complain that characters in movies of this sort are not likable, but I think it's made very clear that the two lead women are in a profession that leaves them no time to be likable. Both of them do a tremendous job.

The action came a little thick and fast. I don't think I'd have accepted so many coincidences if they had all turned out in the heroines' favor. And the young prostitute was written both a little too naive and a little too generous. That's worth taking off a star, but I haven't seen such a tense movie in years, nor one that worked so well. Compared with this the typical Hollywood action flick is pure comic book.

I WANT THE ILLUSION
Holly Rowe (Viva Bianca) a call girl has saved up enough money for retirement. She is getting ready to go to Paris. Michael, one of Holly's Johns is a married man who has an unhealthy attachment for her. He wants to run away with her to Paris.

Meanwhile Shay (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) is the new girl on the block making money by giving hand jobs to old men while talking dirty (I couldn't believe that is what old men always request from young girls.) Shay doesn't have a pimp to "protect" her. She has been stepping on the other girl's territory without paying her dues.

Holly has a big score and needs a second girl. All the other girls are busy. That is when she runs into Shay (literally) in the street. She takes Shay under her wing. Of course nothing goes as planned and the working girls witness a murder. They are on the run because...? Prostitutes make for credible witnesses and always run to the cops when they see a crime. The movie becomes a game of cat and mouse...

A Gritty Australian Thriller That Starts Strong But Then Travels Down A Very Familiar Road
I decided to check out Jon Hewitt's "X" anticipating a provocative adult drama. And indeed as the film opened with a delightfully unexpected and somewhat creepy sexual escapade, I thought this Australian endeavor might be a pleasantly twisted surprise exploring the seamy underbelly of the prostitution trade. The film is structured around two working girls, one is a high end call girl on the eve of retirement (Viva Bianca) and one is a penniless girl (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) spending her first night on the streets. As the opening sequences juxtaposed their exploits, the movie is an interesting examination of contrasting lifestyles. Both actresses are quite good in their respective roles, but it is Bianca who really stole the show for me. Recently seen in the Starz original "Spartacus" series as the wily and cunning Ilithyia, it was interesting to see her in something more modern (but no less explicit). And if these two roles are any indication, I suspect she is just at the beginning of...

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated: Spooky Stampede

Mystery Incorporated Season 2 part 2
The last 13 episodes of the series are the best. I kinda have to put some spoilers, though.

40. Heart of Evil - Business with Destroido brings the presence of some other earlier Hanna-Barbera characters, with some parodies of Batman.

41. Theater of Doom - After production for a play about Crystal Cove is haunted by a real ghost, Vincent Van Ghoul helps the gang put on their own musical version.

42. Aliens Among Us - Sheriff Stone tells the gang of his own alien abduction (which, of course, isn't real). With the help of the Planispheric Disk, the gang discovers the "First Key".

43. The Horrible Herd - Professor Pericles mutates a herd of cattle (with piranhas and bees), which start to ravage Crystal Cove. They injure Nova (Scooby's dog girlfriend), and escape to the rest of the world.

DVD Review: "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Season Two Part 2: Spooky Stampede"
Much to the dismay of his many fans, "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated" has come to an end. It's pretty evident Cartoon Network didn't know what to do with the series. It started out airing once a week in an evening slot. There were long gaps in between the seasons. When it did return after a long hiatus, the network shoved the rest of the episodes into one week in what appeared to be an attempt to get the whole affair over with as quickly as possible.

"Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Season Two Part 2: Spooky Stampede" collects the last 13 episodes of this highly acclaimed series. I admit it's definitely different from the other shows featuring everybody's favorite crime solving canine. There are way more adult-oriented jokes and witty pop culture nods and winks that most children of the 2000s won't pick up on. However, I still feel it has elements which would appeal to a younger demographic. What's not to like about a Great Dane and his gang of mystery solvers facing off...

Absolutely Amazing
Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated: Spooky Stampede contains the final thirteen episodes of this amazing series. And it is all entirely spectacular. I've been a Scooby fan for as long as I can remember, and this is the best of them all.
This series is easily the best Scooby-Doo show to ever be made. It is also, in my opinion, possibly the best cartoon in existence, as it has several plots running concurrently, extremely good humor, wonderful and continuing character development, and best of all the monster is real again as it was in Zombie Island.
The first episode on the set, "Heart of Evil," is a personal favorite, because it is all about a Batman-inspired rendition of the Blue Falcon, and the episode itself is quite good and humorous because Dyno Mutt is exactly like his old self! the final six episodes of the set are where this series really shines, however, for it has superior story telling, ideas, amazing voice acting, great visuals and wonderful animation compared to...

Prank

Entertaining Thriller
I watched this movie the other night with a group of friends, and all I can say is wow. I was entertained through out the movie. I would highly recommend

A Fast-Paced Thriller With a Powerful Message
PRANK stakes its claim among the many genres of thriller by digging deep into the frustrations and alienations of its main characters. This is not just a scary movie about teenage revenge. This is an exploration of the many torments of adolescence, and how the desires for sex, status, companionship, and acceptance are too often thwarted by social brutality. It tracks the complexities of coming of age in a world where young people are both idealistic and unforgiving, passionate and intolerant. Smart dialogue, slick cinematography, and inventive editing - it will keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat. Watch this movie.

everybody wants to make a horror film
seems like alot of guys get a digital video camera today, and they think that they can make a great movie the first time. I didn't care at all for this film... it seemed a little amateurish and made for next to nothing. the acting was very bad and just wish that i would not have wasted my time and money watching it. Oh well, i guess first time movie makers have to start out somewhere, just hope that these guys film making gets a whole lot better. i give this movie a one star... there are no negative stars?

Some Days are Better Than Others

Dealing With Detritus
This was actually a lot better than we expected. The interconnecting stories are cohesive...eventually...and the acting is good. Our 2010 Seattle International Film Festival screening audience was clearly invested in the outcome, but none of us were doing handstands over it.

Even though two of the main characters are (capably) played by lead singers from two well-known local bands: James Mercer, front man for The Shins; and Carrie Brownstein of Slater-Kinney, I think this film will have a problem finding an audience, as it isn't funny enough to be considered a comedy, the singing is incidental, and the drama is very understated.

This film centers around the detritus of life. One character is hired to help clear out the house of an elderly woman after she dies, another deals with abandoned dogs at the animal shelter, a third one works in a Salvation Army-type drop-off station. I very much appreciated the way the gal did her job of sorting clothes, books, toys,...

An excellent movie.
This movie is a stark and beautiful portrait of human existence. Searching for the meaning in the connections we have with each other and the world around, this story reminds us that sometimes all we have in life is the story we leave behind. I highly recommend this movie.

AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL FILM
This film is not only touching and funny but also contains some gorgeous shots of the northwest. I recommend to anyone who appreciates good filmmaking that is uncorrupted by the studio system. These characters are so memorable and sweet. You will laugh and cry.

Wilfred: Season Two

Brilliant!!!!
Don't be fooled by any negative reviews. The first season was exceptional and the second season is even better. It's deeper and more complex. "Wilfred" is the most original and funniest series I've ever seen. Don't miss out on this wonderful show.

I was wrong
When I saw commercials for this show I thought that it must be so stupid - but I was wrong. It is very funny and extremely well done.

What a delightful show! Kept me entertained while in the hospital.
When I first saw this show advertised, I thought it was the silliest thing ever. And then I was laid up in the hospital with emergency foot surgery. So, I decided to watch the first season. And then I was addicted. You wouldn't think that a guy in a dog suit would be that funny, but it is really a hilarious play on life in general and Wilfred says and does things that just make life, as horrible as it can be, more bearable.

Rectify

Six Episodes That Defy Easy Categorization: Sundance Scores With The Season's Most Unusual And Thoughtful Drama
The six episode "Rectify" is being touted as the first original series created specifically for the Sundance Channel. And it is quite unlike anything else that you're likely to see on TV this year. I mean this as the highest compliment. I was so caught up in this unusual and strangely powerful drama that I watched all six episodes over the course of two days. A word of warning, though, much of "Rectify" is left relatively open-ended. Also, much is left to interpretation. In this way, it may not satisfy those expecting more conventional television fare. In truth, the program is a little scattershot and even a tad overcrowded. I would have liked to follow certain characters or situations more thoroughly. What is does present, however, is absolutely mesmerizing. Chilling, spiritual, darkly humorous, contemplative, the show defies easy categorization. And with an anything could happen feel, I absolutely fell in love with "Rectify." Created by Ray McKinnon (an actor most recently seen on...

So much quality, you won't believe it's television
This journey down the rabbit hole of the real and mundane starts with the release of the protagonist, Daniel Holden, from death row after 19 years due to DNA evidence. Although his guilt or innocence remains unclear, the whodunit of it is beside the point. How he is to fit into any life and how we all fit together (or don't) is the show's concern. This slow burn series is thought provoking, nuanced, delicate and what I believe to be the best writing on T.V. ever. It is insightful to the human condition, hyper aware of the convenience, artifice, and convoluted nature of our modern life and the books and writing it mentions alone make it worth the watch. It gives you the gift of varied viewpoints with mirrors as well as pictures and I believe the actors are all doing their very best. Unlike a show like Mad Men (which I like) it doesn't try so hard to make you think, it coaxes you there, you want to rise to the material. Show runner Ray McKinnon, an underrated actor and...

Secret Honor

A masterful one-man performance
I saw this movie on cable the year it came out. Although I was only 16 at the time and knew almost nothing about Watergate, I was absolutely awe-struck by Philip Baker Hall's riveting portrayal of Richard Nixon. There are no car chases, no love scenes, no special effects -- just one actor relying solely on raw acting talent to tell a complicated story in a way that is so powerful, so multilayered, that it holds your attention for over an hour.

Now that I have a fuller knowledge and understanding of political scandals in general, I'm equally impressed with the alarming depth and accuracy of this movie's "fictional" script writing. The writers obviously had inside knowledge of the plutocratic string pulling that goes on in Washington.

It is puzzling, to say the least, why a movie this good is so hard to come by, especially when one considers how well-known the director is.

I am the American dream.
SECRET HONOR invites us to spend an intimate evening alone with the only man ever to resign the presidency, Richard Nixon. The Criterion disk contains a bunch of extras, including an hour and twenty-some minutes worth of Nixon, the real Nixon, on videotape and kinescope. It surveys a number of his speeches, beginning with the Fund Crisis (`Checkers') Speech in 1952 and ending with his August 9, 1974 Farewell Speech to the White House Staff. Also included is a newspaper managing editors' question and answer session, from 1973, in which Nixon first told us "I am not a crook." If you're new to Nixon, or need a refresher course in Nixonia, I strongly suggest you watch these before watching the movie. A few politicians are, maybe once in their career, forced to make an embarrassing speech confessing a personal weakness or transgression. Nixon seemed to have made a career out of such speeches, and this tip-of-the-iceberg special feature gives a good sense of Nixon's personal...

"Secret Honor" - best kept secret in Nixon films!
Philip Baker Hall's performance as Richard Milhous Nixon rates as my favorite among Nixon films. His portrayal of Nixon covers all the bases, from quiet obedience to his beloved mother to the snarling, foul mouthed paranoiac we've all come to love (or hate). The film is riveting as Hall's Nixon drags the audience deeper and deeper into his harsh world view and finally brings us to the very edge of his despair. The end will have you laughing, cringing or both. Brings into sharp relief the concept that we are all heroes in our own mind, and it will make you wonder what sort of spirit dwells in the leaders we currently elect if a man this twisted with hate, self loathing and paranoia could be elected president twice. Just an amazing film. Even if you don't subscribe to Hall's portrayal as reality you can't deny that this a talented and powerful performance. This film should be a must have among the "conspiracy" minded.

No One Will Know

Twisted and intense!
A fun and suspenseful movie! It was delightful watching the plot unfold. The director did a great job of keeping the tension going with lots of twists, all the way through the end. I'd love to see what he could do with a bigger budget!!

SUSPENSEFUL!
This is a fun thriller with surprising twists and really intense moments. It's classic Hitchcock style - suspenseful, shocking, beautiful, and full of tongue-in-cheek, dark humor. Check it out!

Decent plot, but sub-par acting
This plot read well on the DVD cover and it had many intriguing possibilities; however, I simply could not get past the sub-par acting by a majority of the actors, especially Jesse Draper, who played one of the two main characters (and who was also the executive producer). Since she was in almost every scene of the movie, it was very hard to get past her bad acting and enjoy the plot.

I suppose Jesse Draper, the executive producer, really wanted to play the main role of Aubrey herself; however, Kelly Curran, who played Elle, the "dead" girlfriend, would have been a MUCH BETTER Aubrey, as she seemed to have the most genuine acting ability of all of the actors, and, unfortunately, she was "killed off" immediately. I understand that having a small budget limits many of the casting decisions, but, making that one, small change and having Curran play Aubrey, instead of Draper, would have made the movie much more bearable (Ben Bledsoe, who played the other main character, was...

Stoker

Coming-of-age-horror-romance...
Stoker is the type of film you don't see very often. It has a small cast with huge star power, a brilliant script, expertly crafted design in both set and costume, and a truly fascinating story. The film is told less through dialogue and more through action, facial expression, and the imagery of a scene. Stoker doesn't spoon-feed its audience. It expects them to be attentive and alert, ready to come to their own conclusions.

As a horror film it is strangely elegant. As a romance film it is quite disturbing. As a coming-of-age film, it is simply chilling!

Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, and Mia Wasikowska all provide some wonderful acting here. Kidman's talent is to be expected, but Goode and Wasikowska are especially impressive. Matthew Goode is nearly unrecognizable in his emotions on display here and Mia Wasikowska completely owns the role. Its hard to take your eyes off these characters.

The elegance of the set and costume design is surprising, giving...

Masterful, Dark Poetry
"Stoker" is a beautiful, twisted, hypnotic trance - it's meant for an audience not overly concrete in it's thinking but who have an open imagination and are able to take the plunge into the darkly poetic vision of it's director. The three principle actors are superb but Mia Wasikowska really gives the film a beating heart, as she emerges from her innocense into her latent self. This movie is filled with images that are as disturbing as they are lyrical and open to endless interpretation. I've seen the movie three times in theaters and find that my impressions change with each viewing and that it has really haunted my imagination. "Stoker" is one of those unique and mysterious masterpieces that I'm sure I will be returning to frequently over the years - there's much to drink in, as the well runs deep,

A masterpiece
* Also published on Imdb *

Another masterpiece by Park, who playfully, coldly and ruthlessly explores the darkness of the human psyche.

The movie is not only as good as the trailer, but hugely better and even more mysterious and captivating. It simply blows your mind away. Fortunately, I ignored the negative Anglophobe reviews and watched it. It's the most complete artistic work by Chan-wook Park in his career so far, an ingenious masterpiece, with the only minor complaint being the lack of the explicit violence he depicts in his Korean movies; this is not his fault though, but the request of the American companies involved, and still he manages to make us shiver with the cruelty of the violent scenes depicted and insinuated.

To fully appreciate this movie, you must have watched Old Boy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and in general to be a fan of Korean and Japanese cinema. The script is excellent, violent, unpredicted, the plot mysterious and...

SlugTerra: Slugs Unleashed

Adorable Slugs!
Ever since we first heard of Slugterra my whole family has been hooked. Yes I admit I watch it with them. First I want to say this is not like the Japanese-animation shows, which I don't usually like. The show is colorful, fun and the only weapons really used is their Slug Blaster which shoots slugs. My boys (5 and 6) think it is so silly to see the slugs flying through the air and are excited to see which power will be unleashed. This DVD contains five episodes with almost two hours of Slugterra fun and while these are episodes that have been on television before, my boys didn't mind watching them again. It is nice to have the DVD to watch them anytime. I recommend this for any child looking for a new show to watch! If your worried too if they'll like it, check your local listings on television for when Slugterra is on!

I received this DVD to review in exchange for sharing my honest opinion.

Absolutely perfect for 6 year old boys.
Short and sweet. My 6 year old son LOVES this. It is pretty much a rip-off from another popular kids show, but my son could care less- and it's done very well. The slugs are pretty funny, he loves them. He actually wants to catch real slugs to make characters out of them- I am really hoping that does not happen. He has watched this over and over and over again- it's cute, harmless, and funny. Your child will be happy I can assure you!

great series 4 1/2 stars
This is a great series that kept the whole family entertained, I only wish that the discs were longer and contained more shows. But this is still a great show and one of my 9 and 6 year old sons favorites.

Handy manny
Good fun for the children. Handy Manny can be relied on to be safe watching for young children. Non violent and no bad language

Great for Preschoolers
I have already written a review for this and do not know why it is here again, as I purchased only one copy. A great Disney Jr movie for preschoolers. Handy Manny and his tool friends and other friends are watching a movie. But the projector breaks down. Handy Manny and the tools have to fix it. Some of the tools put on a show during the repair time. They put on a fun show, full of laughter. Finally everyone gets to see the movie, as the projector is fixed.

Heartland: The Complete Third Season

Heartland the third season
This purchase was extremely disappointing. I purchased the DVD set based on price and did not realize that this vendor should not have even been listed on a US website as the DVDs they sent me are not even compatible with US DVD equipment. They are in Scotland. Seriously ridiculous...

BUYER BEWARE, Please Read On! (5 Stars For The Season Itself)
First off I already own seasons 1-5 that I purchased on eBay, and I wholeheartedly give a 5 star rating for each season! The main reason for this review is to give a heads up for potential buyers, because I'm seeing 2 different problems/complaints in these reviews.

First, if you are in North America, make sure the disc you are buying states "NTSC (or Region 1)". If it says PAL (Region 2), you dvd player likely won't be able to play it (unless it's region free). The covers will be different than the original Canadian releases, and will likely have a triangle or round rating on the front cover.

Second, if there's an orange bar across the top of the cover that states "GMCTV/UP TV" that is the US release, and is NOT the true "complete season"-- as aired in Canada on CBC network!

Here's the deal with GMCTV/UPTV. Because the US will always be behind in the way they can air seasons here (which is about a season and a half behind CBC, the Canadian network...

Heartland: A place of love for Family, horses and friends
Heartland is a wonderful series about a family that lives on a ranch in Canada. The family has its ups and downs but their love for each other and the horses they care for is remarkable. The title sums it up. They really do have a heart for their family, home and the horses and animals they work with and care for.The scenery is breathtaking! The characters are great! Each one does a tremendous job portraying their role and the Grandfather, Jack, is super as he adds real heart and humor to the show. It's a story you can relate to and each episode keeps you wanting more. I recommend this series for families. Be sure to start at the beginning as the story unfolds with each episode.

I'll Do Anything: Live In Concert [Blu-ray]

A Fantastic Live Performance, as Expected!
Having seen Jackson Browne in concert many times, I doubt if any "set list" was ever repeated. He's too fluid and tuned in to his audience to let a list keep him from connecting with his fans. As a life-long fan, I don't measure the quality of his performance by what he choose not to do, I think it's more sensible to comment on what he presented to the audience. This concert was an hour and forty-five minutes of what I consider some of my favorite Jackson Browne tunes. Truth is, he didn't have enough "Top 40 hits" to play for an hour and a half. But his best stuff has always been the songs you never heard on radio. And this concert is loaded with his best stuff!
It's almost an acoustic performance, but he has enough solid backing here to do some of the things he hasn't done in a while, and do them well. If you're a true JB fan, you'll love it. If you're more of Top 40 person, try FM radio and get the same stale, dated tunes you apparently crave.
I purchased the Blu-ray, and...

it's great.....
I hate to sound like everyone else when I say I've seen Jackson Browne in concert many times over the past 35 plus years. I was lucky to catch on at the time his second record (For Everyman) was current, and so for many years have enjoyed his talent. Late For The Sky is surely one of the most important records of the historic era of stereo records/rock and roll/FM radio. By purchasing and listening to his records, I can confirm that there are many great songs in his catalog. But saying so, I'm no more qualified to rate this dvd concert than any other fan.

I ordered it a couple days ago, it arrived yesterday, I watched it last night. I last saw him in concert a couple years ago when he was touring solo/acoustic/small venues. This concert is more recent, with a complimenting group of younger musicians backing him up. Like many older fans probably feel, there's no substitute for David Lindley in my opinion for the violin/pedal steel flavor of the early Jackson Browne...

All I can say is, "See (complainers) what you have done?! You have now helped feed right into Amazon being able to make the product only available from their third party sellers, thus causing people to have to pay more for it!! Burn

Informative and powerful documentary
I saw this in the theater with a group from my fire department and we all came away very impressed. BURN not only tells the story of the challenges, struggles and positives of the firefighters of Detroit, but also shines a larger light on the problems of urban decay and a dying city. Whether you are part of the fire and emergency services world or not, I highly recommend giving BURN a watch. It's a great view into the world of the firehouse and what these men and women, from chief to rookie, goes up against every day.

What a great documentary!
I saw this at the theatre when it first came out. It was a very informative look at the problems and pressures that DFD face on a daily basis. Definitely a must see. Highly recommended.

Great documentary!
I bought this movie expecting it to be as good as people made it sound. It exceeded expectations, and I plan to buy the DVD asap. Keep in mind this is a DIGITAL copy of the documentary. Well worth the money, and the story itself is worth buying!

Who's So-Called Life Is It Anyway?

Unfortunetly CUT and Edited!
When I first read on the internet , that the sabrina DVDs would be edited, I never realised this as being a big problem. I hardly noticed anything in season two and in season one the 'a girl like you' song was missing, which was a bit crap to find out.

So anyway, after watching the edited versions of the first seasons , it didn't seem to me as too cut until I got season three. But season three has more problems then the previous seasons: Phantom Planet was credited on the dvd for an appearence that you could not see on this version. Before the band should have appeared, this version just fades to black and you get the Sabrina introduction. Then a lot of music gets replaced by simple instrumental songs that don't even seem to fit to what is happening. The halloween episode had a great moment in where the "monster mash song" was played. Also , this song was removed.

Apart from noticeble songs missing (and a few scenes) this dvd set is great and the show itself is...

Great Season
Personally, I think that this is "Sabrina's" best season. Sabrina Spellman uses lots of magic as she tries to solve the family secret and get her official witches licenses. One of the best season's overall. Cross your fingers that the DVDs will show it in all it's glory. <3.

Family Secret
I am a huge fan of this show. But maybe someone can help me...this season is about Sabrina's family secret, I can't remember how the season ends but wasn't there a made for TV movie that wraps up the season. "Sabrina Goes To Rome" will the DVD include the movie? There was also another movie I beleive after season 2 "Sabrina Down Under" will we be able own that as well? Either way this show is family friendly and very funny.

Denise Austin: Hit the Spot Core

Good Body Sculpting Workout with the Stability Ball
This DVD has a 5 min. warm-up, three 15 min. sections: core/upper body, core/buns and core/legs, and an 18 min. total body segment consisting of exercises taken from the other 3 sections. You can select each workout individually or customize your workout and have the segments play in any order you choose. If you do core/buns and core/legs, you'll get a great workout for the lower body and abs. Those sections offer a wide variety of effective exercises. In core/buns you'll alternate between lunges and squats with dumbells and stability ball exercises. In core/legs you'll use your own body weight and work the outer and inner thighs and abs. For most of the ab routines Denise shows different levels of intensity. I wasn't crazy about the core/upper body section because it only has about 4 min. of upper body work. I think the workout would have been better with a separate core section. I also wish there was a stretch section. It didn't bother me to alternate between body parts...

Best body I have ever owned!
...And I am no longer in my 20's...

I use this DVD workout 2-3 times a week, and I have not only met my challenge to myself (which was to look like I did in a bikini photo on my honeymoon 11 years ago), but I have surpassed it. Why? Because now I am fit and toned, then I was justly nicely slim.

My advice is to ignore Denise's often objectionable voice and do the workout! Once I memorized the routine, I put music on and keep her track just loud enough for cuing. You can mix-and-match, but I prefer to go through the 5-min warm-up and each of the 15-min segments in one go.

Another good option is to run or do other cardio and finish with her 18 minute superset segment.

The workout is best for intermediate and above, but her reps are low, and there are often a selection of levels to keep you as easy or challenged as you want to be.

As a last testament to this workout I will say this:

After working with her DVD for three...

Good workout, too enthusiastic instructor :-l
Denise Austin really is a good instructor. The only problem I have with her is that she is a little over the top enthusiastic and talks a little too much and isn't always in time to the music or with her own counting.

This workout is good. There are four mix and match segments: core and upper body, core and legs, core and butt, and core and full body (which is made up from the other three segments). This way it's easy not to get bored. You use weights and a stability ball and you can always choose the level that's best for you. She makes it easy to find modifications.

If you want a good workout that is fun to do, go out and get this, but just be aware that somedays, you will need to turn the sound down.

Jack the Giant Slayer [HD]

Lots of Fun
Here's a new take on an old tale. Rated PG-13 and directed by Bryan Singer ("X-Men"), this "Jack and the Beanstalk" is well cast, visually exciting, and lots of fun. Computer Generated Imaging has made fantasy stories more and more fantastical; this one is mind-boggling.

We admire:
* Nicholas Hoult ("Warm Bodies") is resourceful and resolute as Jack, the nice young man who drops a magic bean and... "Uh oh," gets it WET. Later, as he clambers up that amazing beanstalk, he admits he "doesn't much like heights."
* Eleanor Tomlinson ("Alice in Wonderland") is Isabel, an adventurous princess who finds waaaay more adventure than she bargained for.
* Ian McShane ("Deadwood") is the king, ready to marry off his daughter to a much older man in order to achieve peace with a neighboring kingdom. But he pitches right in when his kingdom is under attack.
* Stanley Tucci ("The Hunger Games") makes the perfect bridegroom/villain: ambitious, ruthless and cruel...

This film is fee-fi-fo-FUN - but a little bit too scary for little children...
I liked this film and together with my 12 years old daughter we spend a nice moment watching it. It is however definitely not recommended to little children, like 10 and younger. This review contains limited SPOILERS.

This retelling of old tale of Jack and the Beanstalk is pretty well done, with many key ingredients of fairy tales well in place. There is a brave and ultimately quite clever farm boy (Jack), a cute and quite likeable damsel in distress, a noble king, his brave knights, a vilainous treacherous scoundrel, powerful magic items, a really REALLY BAD giant alpha (and beta) and a whole batallion of other giants, almost as dangerous as their two-headed leader.

Past the first 10 minutes, the film is rather quick paced and visually it is very pleasant: the sky domain of giants, the giant beanstalks and the mighty royal fortress are really impressive. The desperate fight of royal army against the giants besieging the great royal castle is a particularly well...

ENDING MOVIES WITH BIG BATTLES... isn't always the most interesting choice
Rumored that "Jack" was doomed to flop, you may assume that going into the film that it may be terrible. That isn't the case. It was just an expensive film to make, approximately $190 million. Based on the fact, that Warner Brothers Studios has numerous movies ("Harry Potter", "Dark Knight", "The Hobbit") in its pocket that will make up for whatever loss, if any, "Jack" sustains, you should not weep for them. Although, you may consider whether or not to take the time to go see it in theaters or get the bluray/DVD.

Why not! It's a fun movie. Not to mention, it is one of those rare movies that anybody in the family can watch and enjoy. There are some dark moments in the film and some mildly scary moments, but it's all fun. We all know the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and now, with today's incredible technology, we can see this fairy tale, mostly imagined up to this point, in vivid 3-D and live action or CG action.

Director Bryan Singer knows a thing or two about...

First things first! Though this Bluray Disc is being promoted as 3D, you do not need a 3D TV to watch it. Upon inserting the BD in your standard BD player an image appears on the screen that asks if you want 3D or 2D. I don't have a 3D player (and see no reason to get one) but enjoyed this set.

I used the word "set" in previous paragraph because there are two discs in the package and - between the two there are THREE different programs with a total running time of nearly 3

Denise Austin: Fat Burning Dance Mix

Great Workout!
This workout gets you moving and keeps your heartrate up throughout the dance mixes.
It can be done at all fitness levels.

fun AND tough workout
pros: denise's happy attitude, variety of moves, fun dance moves
cons: length is daunting for newbies, ton of moves to learn first time, length only good for diehard workouts

Love denise austin, she has an amazing attitude that's always genuine. This is clearly an advanced workout, though obviously you can take your own breaks (which I did). I got to about 40 minute and finished with my own cool-down. I'm intermediate, and just the complexity of so many dance moves was both fun and daunting. since it's called 'mix',lives up to it. Excellent variety, good background music. Enjoyed it a lot.

Not Bad
Not sure if I like it that you cannot choose which segment you want. It plays everything all at once. The quality is so-so. But Denise Austin is a cheerful person which helps me get motivated to complete your workout.

The Amazing Adventures of the Living Corpse

Finally a Hero!
I watched this on a recommendation from a friend and wasn't disappointed. Granted it's not the best Zombie flick I've ever seen but I really liked that it was a new take on the genre. I'm glad somebody actually made a zombie the hero for once. It is animated which might put some people off but I think it gave the makers a little more creative license. I gave it 4 stars for the effort.

Highly Recommended
Highly recommended to any person interested in a kick ass animated film. The violence is not that intense as an R rating is led to believe. Great story and visuals. Cool score and wicked end credit song. Based on an awesome graphic novel The Living Corpse by Ken Haeser and Buz Hasson. I have three kids that were able to enjoy the movie (4-7) and they were not bothered by it one bit. It's animated and resembles a video game in some instances. This is why I'm puzzled by an R rating. Still highly recommended if you want an enjoyable movie. It comes with a digital copy of the newest Living Corpse book as well. What a value!

Animated Horror!
Being a huge fan of horror films, I never thought an animated horror film would bring such suspense and thrill. I definitely recommend this one for any horror movie fans out there!

5 Souls

Sorry, this is just a waste of time
This film does not have poor production values, the acting isn't bad, and it's not made in someone's back yard with a shakey-cam, but it's just not a good film. The concept is murky, the film is confusing and it just doesn't reach out & grab you or fill you full of dread...it's just rather dull and flat. A man has gone to get vaccinations prior to going to Africa on his honeymoon, has a serious reaction & ends up in the hospital. He is visited by some guy holding a rosary that claims he is some kind of entity, a fallen angel, if you like, and the man is asked to prove himself by killing 5 people. It turns out the man happens to be an architect & he & his fiancee were involved in some shady dealings that caused a building to collapse. There is an ex-cop on the trail of the contractor these people worked for because his young daughter died in the building collapse. How does this all fit together, you may ask? I was asking myself the same thing. The answer is, not very well. Do...

I'M FREE TO ROAM IN A PRISON OF DARKNESS
This is an odd film that is an existential mystery. Noah (Ian Bohen) finds himself in a coma talking to the angel of death (Steven Schub). He cuts a deal. He lives if he kills 5 people. This aspect reminded me a little of the film "Subliminal."

In a subplot Sam (Steve Bacic) and Sara (Allison McAtee) are investigating a collapsed building. The two subplots tie together about an hour into the film.

This is one of those films that is well made for the genre. It kept me interested, yet frustrated at the lack of clues. The ending was interesting but was a bit preachy. It is more of an experimental indie style film that is not for everyone. Don't expect a major league horror film as depicted on the cover.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, brief rear nudity (Kristina Anapau). Allison McAtee- bra/panties/side breast.

Disappointing horror film
5 SOULS tries to be a slick and original horror film, but it simply has too many flaws that it can't overcome. The result is a convoluted tale that leaves the viewer wanting more.

I really wanted to enjoy this film. The premise sounds solid and director Brett Donowho has another film out there that looks really good (A HAUNTING AT SILVER FALLS) as well. But it can't overcome its problems. As the credits rolled, I actually felt kinda sad. This movie could have been so good.

5 SOULS is shot pretty well, although there are several grainy shots and a few of the low-light scenes look too dark. The acting is ok, although Steven Schub stands out among the rest of the cast as the evil `demon' who is forcing him to collect souls. Schub relishes his evil role and portrays it with the dramatic flair of a Shakespearean actor.

There's no special effects or gore to speak of, but there are plenty of opportunities where it could have been used. I'm not sure if...

Ghost Army

Phenomenal documentary & part of WWII history
I sort of stumbled upon The Ghost Army on PBS by accident. Since the word "ghost" almost always catches my eye anyway, I was intrigued to find out what The Ghost Army was all about. When I discovered it was about WWII history, another area that interests me, I stopped channel surfing and tuned in. Great move on my part. I was amazed listening to the stories of how artists, some who went on to become quite well known, contributed to the war effort in an very unusual manner. Even Bill Blass served in this particular company of the Army! (And contrived his logo while in service.) It was super interesting to learn how they came up with the trickery they did. Highly recommend investing an hour of your time to watching this bit of history being recounted and preserved.

Fascinating Documentary of Art and Intrigue
This film tells the story, kept secret for nearly 50 years after the war, of a small WW2 unit of artists, actors, sound engineers, and "regular guys" who conducted missions designed to deceive the Nazis in France after D-Day. Interviews with surviving veterans (all with a twinkle in their eyes as they talk about the "fakery" and the "trickery" they perpetrated), remarkable color film footage from the period, beautiful artwork created by the artists during their down time, impressive graphics which make the deceptions clear, and a wonderful narration by Peter Coyote (who makes you believe he knows everything there is about the Ghost Army and wants you to know it too--and care passionately about it!), make this a film not to be missed. I have watched it numerous times, and told my family and friends about it, and everyone who has seen it has told their friends.

Awesome
I had been waiting for this to come out ever since my client told me about the unit and that a documentary was being made about it. He was a radio man in this unit. It is an amazing story, and was so well presented. This is a must see! I even saw my client in it twice.

Zuelleni is an academic city where pretty much the entire population is made up of students and everything is run by the student council president. Layfon, a teenage boy with a mysterious past, comes to Zuelleni to escape said past. He wants to start his life anew, as a regular, average student. But too bad for him - upon arriving at school for the first day, he is immediately forced into the military arts program. He is assigned to the 17th Platoon, after leader Nina asks for him to fill a recently vacated spot on the team. The rest of the platoon consists of mechanical ace Harley, sharpshooter and ladies man Sharnid, and ne'in operator Felli. However, it is pretty soon evident that Layfon isn't in any need of military training.....

I actually quite enjoyed this series. I'm not really sure why, since there...

A Great Time to Be Had
Chrome Shelled Regios is not a ground-breaking anime as the other reviewers have pointed out, nor it is free from employment of various anime tropes. Nonetheless, as a great writer pointed out a couple of hundred years ago (who could that have been?) 'there's nothing truly new under the sun,' and for me the question is not whether an anime series is entirely fresh in its approach, as much as how does it handle the material it uses. In this sense, I believe Chrome Shelled Regio succeeds admirably. I had a great time watching the show! I watched it twice.

That said, I really wish there was a season two. I believe this is the reason for all the plot threads left hanging. The end of season one left us nicely set up to deal with the plot machinations of this Ignacious character, whoever or whatever he is. There were some rumors on the web that a season two was on the way but those were circa 2010 so I have to assume that, for whatever reason, it was decided not to produce...

Awesome Anime
One of the best animated series I own. Very mpressed with the storyline development, and sequencing. The main characters development throughout the story and the supporting casts development pushed the storyline to the liit and past. Recommended to anyone who is an avid anime lover.

Ultraman: Series One, Vol. 1

Ultra-pleased! And if you want to be, too, watch it in Japanese!
There sure are a lot of mean-spirited know-nothings out there, judging from the semiliterate 1-star reviews this puppy is racking up. It's almost as if they liked the craptacular bootleg versions of this that were floating around before...

Look. This isn't absolutely perfect. The dub version has some pretty distracting audio problems, but they're transitory, and I am 99% certain it was the best they could do at the price-point they wanted to be able to offer. Could they have cleaned up the audio? I'm not sure, but I bet if they did the whiners would be whining that the set cost $75.00.

People are complaining about how it sometimes drops into subtitled Japanese--this is so that you can watch THE WHOLE EPISODE, for the first time ever in the US. The US version was previously heavily edited for time. And this simply illustrates my point, to wit:

This is a Japanese series. The actors are Japanese. The director was Japanese. The scripts were in...

Not perfect - but THRILLED that it's finally available!!!
Ok, first off, I have to respectfully disagree with the bad reviews here re: quality of this release. After reading them, and then buying the set, I was pleasantly suprised when I popped it in the dvd player. The video quality is very good (without question better than any of the three different bootlegs sets I've seen) and the audio dub is, well, pretty good. Was the audio totally restored and cleaned up? No, I don't think so but it doesn't sound overly noisy (again, especially compared to bootlegs). I have the Japanese laserdisc set and I also have the Japanese DVD box set that was fully remastered (video and audio [only in Japanese though - no english dub or subtitle included]). The picture quality on the Japanese dvd set is amazing but this set looks pretty d*mn good...AND this set has the english dub and subtitles! AND it's very affordable! For $20, packaging is great, as are the menus and booklet. If you're an ultraman fan, should you buy it? ABSOLUTELY!!

Re:...

Great show, not a great DVD
Like many others I've waited a long time to see Ultraman again and am thrilled about this DVD set. It's a great show, just the way I remember it... in fact it's funnier than I could have realized back when I was a kid. Several of the shows are downright magical especially 'The Rambunctious One From Space.' The writing in this particular show is funny, touching and sometimes just scary enough for kids. Great family viewing or wonderful if you're just into the kitsch of it all.

For new fans thinking about getting this set: you're about to see the origins of Power Rangers and other similar shows. Only the original Ultraman is the king of the genre and never successfully imitated.

For anyone reading all of the harsh reviews, be aware that bootleg versions of these shows are NOT better. It is true that the sound on this set is often poor but it is the best we're going to get. And the fact that it includes the original Japanese language track (and subtitles) puts it...

Denise Austin: Bootcamp - Total Body Blast

Not what I was expecting from Denise... in a GREAT way!
I have a ton of fitness videos, and picked this one up on a whim. I am SO glad I did! I was surprised at how efficient the entire program was.. it was fast moving, but I felt like my entire body was worked, and worked well. I almost gave up on Denise after her Burn Fat Fast video, which was frustrating in that it didn't provide a high intensity workout.

I completed the entire program tonight, and it was FUN and not in a dancy, breezy way - but in a way that moved along without getting boring.

Beginners will definitely get frustrated with this because it IS Denise, and her cueing is atrocious.. BUT if you exercise often, and are familar with a variety of moves you will catch on quickly. I highly recommend this dvd for exercisers wanting to throw in some great variety (which there is a TON in this video) I am now a happy (boot)camper!

I used to run 10k a day
I used to be a very active athlete..running, basketball, gymnastics...you name it. A couple of months ago I graduated college and moved out to a tiny apartment in a big city with my boyfriend and needed to find a way to workout without paying big bucks for a gym and without running in the dangerous area I live in.

This was the answer. I consider myself in great shape, and was very skeptical about girly workout videos. Since I started this video my flexibility improved greatly, I've become more defined, and my balance has improved. I never weigh myself, but if you eat your greens and use this workout tape, you will lose fat. Also, I'm very muscular and was worried about getting "big," and this doesn't do that at all.

I was also very concerned about how cheesy this was going to be. I didn't want to look like an idiot working out in front of my boyfriend, and you really don't do anything ridiculous, like some of the dance cardio stuff out there. In fact, sometimes...

Not my cup of tea...
I bought this DVD in hopes that I could work it in with the rotation of the other exercise DVD's I own in an effort to keep from plateauing. I was very disappointed with the workout on the DVD. I am not going to criticize Denise though because I found her as the host/leader to be alright. What I didn't care for was the choreography on this DVD. There were several things about the choreography that I didn't like such as the fact that so few reps are done on each exercise and just as you really getting into one exercise it is time to move on to the next. There is a lot of jumping and bouncing involved which I don't really care for, and this workout requires you to have an extraordinary amount of balance. I also didn't feel like I worked out. I consider this DVD to be a moderate workout and I was hoping for a heavy workout. I also felt like this DVD was misleading. On the case it says there is kick boxing and there was very little kick boxing used in this workout.

All in all,...

Houdini

Worthy biopic of the world's greatest daredevil
HOUDINI first aired as a "TNT Original Movie" on December 6, 1998. While not the best of the Houdini biopics (I still have a soft spot for the 1953 Houdini), it still has much to recommend it.

Notably, production design and the musical score is magnificent. HOUDINI is also the first Houdini biopic to dramatize Houdini's egotism...maybe too much so. Johnathon Schaech's over-the-top, manic Houdini is far different from Tony Curtis or Paul Michael Glaser. This makes him less likable. But as his wife Bess (Stacy Edwards) says in the film, "I fell in love with Ehrich Weiss. I put up with Houdini."

While HOUDINI takes plenty of dramatic license (Houdini's mother never kissed or held him???), it still does a good job of weaving in real Houdini history. It is the first Houdini film to give an accurate account of how he and Bess met. We also get to see the death bed promise young Ehrich made to his...
